Leading logistics and warehousing provider Johnston Logistics UK have given several hard-working students an opportunity to top up their bank accounts and experience life in a modern logistics hub.
Four local students, studying at universities across the UK, have gained experience and earnt money throughout the Summer, performing various roles at Johnston Logistics UK’s Norfolk operations.
The group includes Toby, studying a masters degree in engineering at Lancaster University, Charlotte, studying English at Exeter University, and Oliver, who is about to begin studying Business Economics at York University.
In addition, Bertie has just completed a masters degree in engineering at Cambridge and is about to start on a future leaders programme, helping set up a warehouse operation for his new employer.
“It’s good to be able to give opportunities to people from a range of backgrounds. These young people have worked hard and it’s encouraging to see such a strong work-ethic in the next generation” says Jane Bull, Head of Compliance for Johnston Logistics UK.
The quartet have completed a number of roles including picking and packing orders for retail outlets, fulfilling e-commerce orders and reprocessing returned goods.
Summer jobs are an important stepping stone for many students, giving them experience, welcome income and demonstrating their skills and drive to future employers.
“We think it’s a good way to experience the world of work and they’ve all been very keen to understand the various elements which make up our business. With the recovery, our summer has been exceptionally busy too, so we’ve welcomed the extra hands!” adds Jane.
The experience has perhaps been most relevant to Cambridge-graduate Bertie who will be beginning his career in the world of logistics this autumn.
“Bertie is about to start with one of UK’s largest safety equipment companies. He’ll be helping establish a new very narrow aisle distribution warehouse in Newcastle, so we hope his experience with us will be invaluable!” concludes Jane.
