Johnston Logistics UK Help Clients Distribute Phillip Schofield Wine in Innovative New Bottle

Experts in alcohol logistics, Johnston Logistics UK, have supported the collaboration of two of their clients who are now providing TV presenter Phillip Schofield’s signature wine in a ‘through the letterbox’ bottle.

Craft wine specialists When In Rome, who provide wine in sustainable boxes, have joined forces with wine packaging start-up Garçon Wines to also offer Philip Schofield’s organic red wine in a flat eco-friendly bottle which saves space, weight and energy and fits through an average UK letterbox.

Last year, ITV This Morning presenter and wine lover Phillip Schofield partnered with craft wine specialists When In Rome to select his signature red, white and rosé wines. Rather than traditional bottles, When In Rome package all their wines in a box which they say saves up to 90% of the carbon emitted from a single use glass bottle.

During the launch of his wine, Schofield stated “I wanted figures on how eco-friendly box wine was and I wanted it to be good value. The result is something I felt I could really invest in. I don’t think there is anything I have been so passionate about.”

Now, to provide even more sustainable options for consumers, When In Rome have come together with wine packaging start-up Garçon Wines to package Schofield’s Nero di Troia organic red in a 100% recycled plastic bottle.

Garçon Wines’ multi award-winning flat wine bottles are made from recycled PET plastic, a lightweight material which produces less CO₂ than glass and is easily and widely recyclable. However, the flat design also means they are spatially 40% smaller than a round glass wine bottle of the same volume and so require less space when transported. In addition, at just a few centimetres wide, the flat shaped bottle can fit through many UK letterboxes for even easier delivery to consumers.

The collaboration between When In Rome and Garçon Wines has been aided by their mutual relationship with Johnston Logistics UK who provide bonded warehousing and logistics for both from their operations in East Anglia.

“We’re thrilled to have played a part in helping our clients come together to expand the sustainable packaging options in Phillip Schofield’s wine range . Sustainability is at the very heart of modern logistics, so the bottle’s energy- and space-saving design is great. And who wouldn’t want a lovely bottle of Phil’s favourite tipple through their letterbox!” says Iain Hill, Head of Commercial & Customer Services for Johnston Logistics UK.

When choosing the alcohol logistics experts in 2020, When In Rome’s Commercial Director, Antony Wolowiec, said “Johnston Logistics UK stood out because of their reputation and experience working with many leading wine and drink brands. We care very much about the attention that goes into the wines we source, so it’s only fitting we have a logistics partner who cares as much about how they are handled.”

Both When In Rome and Garçon Wines growing success has led to the need for an external logistics partner to help receive, store and distribute their goods.

Johnston Logistics UK import, export and distribute beer, wine and spirits across the UK, Europe and the world. Every year they ensure hundreds-of-thousands of bottles reach satisfied trade customers, which now includes Phillip Schofield’s flat-bottled Nero di Troia.

Johnston Logistics UK provides a complete range of third-party logistics from palletised warehousing to individually picking and fulfilling customer orders. At any one time, they handle over 20,000 pallets of alcoholic drinks and over 50% of all wine sold by Asda supermarket’s flows through their site in Norfolk.
